Part 1 — MacBook logic board anatomy
Before diving into specific defects, let\'s clarify what components exist on a modern MacBook logic board. This helps you understand what a serious technician tells you.
SoC (System on Chip)
On Apple Silicon (M1-M5): CPU + GPU + Neural Engine + memory controller + Secure Enclave in one chip. On Intel: separate CPU (i5/i7/i9) + integrated or dedicated GPU.
RAM (Unified Memory)
On Apple Silicon: soldered next to SoC (LPDDR5). On Intel 2016-2017: removable SO-DIMM (very rare). Intel 2018+: BGA soldered, not individually repairable.
SSD / NAND Storage
Apple Silicon: NAND chips soldered, controller integrated in SoC, hardware-encrypted via Secure Enclave. Intel 2016+: soldered NAND, separate T2 controller.
T2 Security Chip (Intel 2018-2020 only)
Coprocessor for security, SSD management, audio, Touch ID, recovery. The most problematic Apple chip. Dead = completely bricked MacBook.
PMIC (Power Management IC)
Main voltage regulator. On Intel: ISL9239 / ISL9240. On M1-M2: U7800. On M3-M4: PI3USB30532. Defect = MacBook does not power on, abnormal drain, sudden shutdown.
Charging IC (USB-C)
On USB-C models: CD3215 / CD3217 / CD3216 (Texas Instruments). Manages Power Delivery negotiation with the charger. Defect = "No charger detected" or slow charging.
SMC (System Management Controller)
On Intel: separate chip U8900 or similar. On Apple Silicon: integrated in SoC. Manages fans, temp sensors, stand-by power, buttons.
Audio Codec
Cirrus Logic CS42L83 or similar. Defect = no sound from internal speakers or dead microphone. Repairable via microsoldering.
I/O Controllers (USB-C, Thunderbolt)
On Intel: Titan Ridge chip (JHL7540). On Apple Silicon: integrated. Defect = ports not working or Thunderbolt disconnected.
On Apple Silicon, integration is extreme — many functions go into the SoC. That makes the board "simpler" at first glance, but EXTREMELY expensive when SoC fails (= new board). On Intel, components are separate, so individually replaceable via microsoldering.
Part 2 — Top 10 specific defects per MacBook model
Here\'s exactly what defect appears most frequently on each MacBook generation in the last 10 years. With chip name (from schematic), technical cause, symptoms and what we do.
MacBook Air 2018-2019 (Intel)
Main defect: U7800 (PPBUS_G3H) — burnt PMIC
Symptom: MacBook does not power on at all. Red Magsafe LED or no light. No boot chime. Battery doesn't charge.
Technical cause: Apple-recognised manufacturing defect. Chip fails after 2-3 years of normal use. Frequent after liquid spill or surge.
Repair: U7800 replacement via microsoldering. Original component available. 3-hour operation. 90% recovery rate.
Our price: from 1,200 RON (board repair)
MacBook Pro 13" Touch Bar 2016-2019
Main defect: Dead T2 chip + Flexgate display
Symptom: MacBook does not boot after restart, "Mac OS could not be installed" in recovery. Or bottom display area darkens with "stage lights" effect.
Technical cause: T2 chip sensitive to surges. Flexgate = undersized backlight flex cable that wears out on repeated lid opening.
Repair: T2: BIOS/EFI reprogramming via specialised programmer. 60% recovery. Flexgate: flex cable swap (if longer version available) or full display assembly replacement.
Our price: from 1,400 RON (board repair) | Flexgate: model-dependent
MacBook Pro 15" Touch Bar 2016-2018
Main defect: dGPU Radeon Pro 555/560 — reballing
Symptom: Display glitches, coloured lines, random restart under graphics load, kernel panic on wake-up.
Technical cause: AMD Radeon Pro GPU with BGA solder pads that crack from thermal cycling. Known as "GPU-gate" on 15" models.
Repair: GPU reballing under BGA station with microscope. Specific thermal profile, takes 4-6 hours. 12-month warranty.
Our price: from 1,400 RON (board repair)
MacBook Pro 16" 2019-2020
Main defect: CD3215 / CD3217 — burnt charging IC
Symptom: No longer charges via any USB-C port, or only via one. Genuine Apple charger not detected. Battery drains without replacement.
Technical cause: Texas Instruments charging controller fails from surge via non-Apple chargers or Aliexpress cables.
Repair: CD3215 or CD3217 replacement via microsoldering. New component, 12-month labour warranty.
Our price: from 1,400 RON (board repair)
MacBook Air M1 2020
Main defect: SSD wear-out (write fatigue)
Symptom: MacBook becomes slow, random hangs, refuses to boot. Disk Utility reports "Internal Disk degraded".
Technical cause: On 8GB RAM models, intensive swap to SSD writes 50-100 GB daily. After 2-3 years, SSD hits write cycle limit. Known as "M1 SSD-gate".
Repair: SSD integrated in SoC = NON-REPAIRABLE individually. Board repair does not solve dead SSD. Recommendation: data recovery + replacement.
Our price: Board repair: from 1,400 RON (won't solve SSD) | Recommendation: new model
MacBook Air M2 / M3 (2022-2024)
Main defect: PMIC U7800 v2 — overheating
Symptom: MacBook shuts off under graphics load (Final Cut, games). No fan present (Air = silent design). Chassis gets very hot.
Technical cause: Lack of fan forces SoC into thermal throttling. At constant temp over 90°C, PMIC degrades in 18-24 months.
Repair: Thermal cleaning + repaste with Premium paste (Honeywell PTM7950) + PMIC check. If PMIC defective, microsolder replacement.
Our price: Dust cleaning: 360 RON | Board repair (PMIC): from 1,800 RON
MacBook Pro M1 Pro/Max (2021)
Main defect: Battery swelling crack — cracked board
Symptom: Swollen battery lifts top-case, mechanical pressure on logic board under battery. Lines on display, imprecise touchpad, random hardware errors.
Technical cause: Swollen lithium-polymer battery exerts force on board (under trackpad). Micro-cracks on BGA traces. Known as "battery pressure-gate".
Repair: URGENT battery replacement + board diagnosis. If traces broken: targeted microsoldering or board replacement (rarely needed).
Our price: Battery replacement + board repair: from 1,800 RON (trace microsoldering)
MacBook Pro M2 Pro/Max (2023)
Main defect: SMC stuck — fans at maximum
Symptom: Fans run constantly at 100% even on empty desktop. System won't boot after sleep. Fans-on-demand unresponsive.
Technical cause: SMC firmware bug integrated in SoC. Apple partially fixed via macOS Sonoma 14.3, but not for all units.
Repair: SMC reset (Apple Silicon specific: hold power 10 sec). macOS Sonoma 14.3+ update. If persists: board repair.
Our price: Diagnostic: free | Board repair (if needed): from 1,800 RON
MacBook Pro M3 / M4 (2023-2024)
Main defect: Hinge wire — broken antenna/display cable
Symptom: Wi-Fi disconnects when opening lid past 100°. Image with artefacts at certain angles. Unstable Bluetooth.
Technical cause: Antenna and display cables run through the hinges. Mechanical wear after 5,000-10,000 openings breaks internal wires.
Repair: Cable replacement via hinge disassembly. Delicate operation, ~4 hours. Difficult access.
Our price: from 1,800 RON (board repair includes access labour)
MacBook Pro M5 (2025)
Main defect: Display connector / hinge spark
Symptom: MacBook completely dead after opening/closing lid a few times. Often burnt smell from hinge.

Repair: Display connector replacement + possible board microsoldering (depending on damage). Detailed photo documentation.
Our price: from 1,800 RON (board repair)
Part 3 — How we diagnose a defective board (our procedure)
Honest diagnostic = we don\'t say "it\'s dead, replace the board". Our 5-step procedure identifies EXACTLY the defective chip or trace, in 2-4 hours of technical work.
Visual inspection under microscope
We check the board with a 40x stereo microscope for: liquid traces (greenish/white corrosion), micro-cracks on traces, swollen capacitors, chips with burnt markings, signs of previous shorts. We document with photos.
Multimeter measurements on key points
Check main voltages: PP3V3_G3H (3.3V), PP5V_G3H (5V), PP12V_G3H (12V on charger), PPBUS_G3H (8.6V), PP1V8 (1.8V SoC). If any is missing, we identify the chip not delivering it.
BoardView + Schematics
We use BoardView files (3D board visualisation) and schematics (electronic schematic) to trace every signal from source to destination. That's how we identify the defective chip or trace with certainty.
Thermal camera for hot spots
We power up the board (if it turns on) or inject controlled voltage. The FLIR thermal camera identifies abnormally hot zones — clear sign of short circuit or chip with drain.
Individual component testing
For suspect chips: in-circuit testing (capacitors, MOSFETs) or extraction and external test. Check if the chip responds to I2C commands (for PMIC) or USB-PD initialisation (for CD3215).
At the end, you get a written report with: identified chip, probable cause, repair cost, alternative (board replacement) and honest recommendation (repair or replace MacBook).
Part 4 — What we repair via microsoldering (concrete operations)
Microsoldering isn\'t magic. They\'re concrete, repeatable operations, with specific thermal profile and dedicated equipment. Here\'s what we actually do in the shop.
PMIC replacement (ISL9239, U7800)
Desoldering with 380°C hot air station, BGA pad cleaning, new PMIC placement with jig, resoldering with specific thermal profile. Post-repair voltage check.
Price: Included in board repair: from 1,200 RON (Intel) / from 1,800 RON (Apple Silicon)
Charging IC replacement (CD3215, CD3217)
TI component with 32 BGA pads. Precise desoldering under microscope, controlled reflow. Test with USB-C analyzer.
Price: Included in board repair: from 1,400 RON (MBP Intel 16") / from 1,800 RON (Apple Silicon)
GPU reballing (Intel 15" Touch Bar)
GPU dismount, reflow with AMD-specific thermal profile, thermal pad replacement, remount with UV adhesive. 4-6 hour operation.
Price: Included in board repair: from 1,400 RON (MBP Intel 15")
MOSFET or SMD capacitor replacement
For localised defects. Standard components, immediately available in our own stock. Fast operation, 30-60 min.
Price: Included in board repair: from 720 RON (old Intel) / 1,200-1,800 RON (recent)
Liquid cleaning + corroded trace repair
Ultrasonic cleaning, ramping broken traces with 0.05mm wire under microscope, insulation with UV-cure. ~70% recovery from liquid spills.
Price: from 500 RON (Intel) / from 600-1,000 RON (Apple Silicon, depending on severity)
EFI/BIOS or SMC reprogramming
Hardware BIOS programmer connected to flash chip. Recovery after failed update or firmware corruption.
Price: Included in board repair: from 720 RON (Intel) / from 1,400 RON (recent)
Part 5 — When NOT to repair (honesty)
We repair 80% of the boards that come to us. The remaining 20% we honestly declare "non-repairable" or "not worth it". Here\'s when.
- ✗ Apple Silicon SoC is dead (burnt seal, missing signal from initialisation). NOT individually replaceable.
- ✗ Multiple broken traces under a major chip (severe liquid damage with deep corrosion).
- ✗ Board was previously repaired incompetently and pads are destroyed.
- ✗ More than 3 major chips defective simultaneously (cascade damage signal).
- ✗ Very old models (pre-2016) where repair cost > second-hand MacBook value.
- ✗ Integrated SSD on Apple Silicon dead — hardware recovery impossible without board replacement.
In these cases we tell you clearly and help with assessment: buy a new model, sell defective board as donor (market exists for remaining working parts), or data recovery if still possible.
Part 6 — How to prevent issues on your MacBook\'s board
6 habits that extend board life by 3-5 years. Applied consistently, they reduce probability of a major repair to 1%.
Use a surge protector (UPS optional)
At least a quality surge protector on the outlet where you charge your MacBook. 100-200 RON investment that avoids 1,500+ RON repairs.
Avoid non-MFi chargers and cables
Aliexpress, "compatible", generic "fast charger 100W" — all can deliver unstable voltage that burns CD3215/CD3217 or PMIC. Use only Apple or Anker/UGREEN with MFi.
Annual thermal cleaning
Dust on fans forces SoC into thermal throttling. Constant temperature over 90°C degrades PMIC and GPU in 18-24 months. 12-month cleaning: 360 RON.
Check battery at first swelling signs
Lifted top-case, trackpad that no longer clicks or clicks "strangely", MacBook that no longer sits flat. URGENT battery replacement — avoids board damage.
Don't leave MacBook in car under sun
Interior temperature can reach 70°C in the Mediterranean. Battery swells, PMIC degrades. Plus theft risk.
Weekly Time Machine backup
On Apple Silicon, if the SoC/SSD die, data is practically lost (hardware encryption). Time Machine + iCloud Drive = backup that actually saves you.
