What display problems do we fix?
Whatever the defect, we have the right solution for your MacBook.
Cracked or broken display
Drop, impact or pressure on the lid. We replace the complete screen assembly.
Vertical / horizontal lines
Coloured or black lines on screen — usually an LCD panel or flex cable defect.
Dead backlight
MacBook powers on, sound is heard, but screen stays black. Could be cable, backlight or panel.
Dead or stuck pixels
Fixed black or coloured dots on screen. Definitive solution: panel replacement.
Staingate / degraded coating
White spots or matte areas on screen. Common defect on MacBook Pro Retina 2013-2017.
Flickering
Screen flickers intermittently. Could be flex, logic board or panel — we diagnose the exact cause.
Why does the MacBook display break?
The MacBook display is a complex component: an LCD or mini-LED panel, a layer of laminated glass, backlight, flex cable running through the screen hinges, and on newer models, a T-CON controller integrated in the assembly. Any component in this chain can fail.
The most common causes we see daily at Radical Service are: dropping the MacBook (off a desk, out of a bag, off a bed), pressure on the closed lid (objects placed on it in a backpack), liquids reaching the screen and seeping into the edges, and flex cable wear — especially on MacBook Pro 2016-2019 models where Apple used a very short flex cable design that progressively wears from repeated screen opening and closing.
Staingate (degraded coating) is a defect specific to Retina MacBooks made between 2013 and 2017. The anti-reflective layer degrades over time, leaving white spots on screen. Apple offered a free replacement program for 4 years from purchase, but most affected MacBooks have passed this deadline. At Radical Service we replace the full display, eliminating the issue permanently.
Flexgate is a flex cable defect on MacBook Pro 2016, 2017 and some 2018 models. Symptom: a bright horizontal band at the bottom of the screen, more visible on dark backgrounds, or screen completely turning off at certain opening angles. Apple fixed the design starting with revised 2018 models (longer flex cable), but if you have an affected model, the solution is replacing the display assembly with one that includes the revised cable.

What type of display do we use?
At Radical Service we use two categories of displays: refurbished original Apple displays (Refurbished) and premium OEM-compatible displays. The choice depends on model, availability and budget — we honestly advise which option suits you.
Refurbished Apple display — these are original Apple assemblies (removed from working MacBooks) that go through a professional refurbishment process: pixel-by-pixel verification, backlight testing, colour calibration and outer glass replacement if needed. Result: a screen identical in performance to a new one, at a 30-50% lower price. True Tone works natively.
Premium OEM display — manufactured by third-party suppliers with identical specs: same Retina resolution, same colour gamut (P3), same brightness. They\'re a more affordable alternative, ideal when the original display isn\'t available or budget is limited. True Tone can be software-calibrated on most models.
Full assembly vs. just the panel: on newer MacBooks (2018+), the display is an integrated assembly (glass + LCD panel + aluminium frame + flex cable + FaceTime camera). We replace the full assembly to guarantee functionality of all components. On older models, we can replace just the LCD panel, significantly reducing cost.

Calibration and testing
We test True Tone, brightness uniformity, colours, FaceTime camera and ambient light sensors. Written warranty.
Display replacement or new MacBook?
A broken display is the most visible problem, but rarely affects the rest of the components. If the MacBook works normally on an external monitor (keyboard, trackpad, Wi-Fi, battery, performance), then display replacement is the obvious economic decision.
Concrete example: a MacBook Air M2 with a broken display. New display at Radical Service: ~780+ RON. New MacBook Air M2 from store: 6,500+ RON. You save over 5,000 RON and get a functionally identical laptop, with the same Apple Silicon performance, the same SSD with all data intact.
Of course, if the MacBook also has other significant issues (faulty logic board, swollen battery, non-functional keyboard), we evaluate everything at diagnostic and honestly advise whether the cumulative investment is worth it or an upgrade is more logical.
Compatible MacBook models
We replace the display for all MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models in current use.
