macOS tells you directly, in the battery menu or in System Report → Power. Past 1000 cycles or below 80% capacity.
Under 2-3 hours of battery life
A new MacBook Air M1 lasts 15+ hours. If yours dies during one meeting, the battery is at the end of its life.
Shuts down at 20-30%
The percentage shown no longer matches the real energy in the cells — the laptop turns off abruptly, without warning.
Trackpad no longer clicks
The battery sits right under the trackpad. When the cells swell they push it from below and the click gets stiff or impossible.

Swollen MacBook battery — why it's urgent
A lithium-polymer battery swells when the electrolyte breaks down and produces gas. The cell becomes a pressurised pouch, trapped between the logic board and the trackpad. The first sign is a trackpad that no longer clicks or a bottom cover that no longer sits flat. The next is a punctured cell — and from there, fire.
What to do: unplug the laptop, shut it down and stop charging it. Don't press on the trackpad, don't force the lid shut, and don't pack it in a bag with other things. Bring it to the shop the same day or call us — do not ship it by courier.
We remove swollen batteries behind protective plates and without pressurised solvent, and the old cell goes to specialised recycling, not the bin. We also check the trackpad and case — they're usually fine if you came in time.

What differs between generations
MacBook Air / Pro 2010-2012
Screw-in battery, out in 10 minutes. The cheapest job. Parts available for almost every model.
Retina 2012-2020 (Intel)
Battery glued into the case, in 4-6 cells. Released with solvent; takes 2-3 hours. On 2016-2019 Touch Bar models the battery is integrated with the trackpad — more involved.
Apple Silicon M1-M5
Glued battery, with pull tabs on some models. Large capacity (up to 100 Wh on Pro 16"). macOS may show an "unverified part" notice — informational, no limitations.
