A MacBook that won't turn on is one of the most common issues we see at Radical Service. Causes range from trivial (fully drained battery) to complex (logic board defects), but in the vast majority of cases, the problem is fixable.

Power circuit is the #1 cause. The MacBook has a complex power chain: from the charging port (MagSafe or USB-C), through the power management circuit (controlled by the CD3215 chip on USB-C models), then to the battery and the rest of the components. If a single capacitor or MOSFET in this chain burns out, the MacBook stops getting power — even though the charger and battery are functional.

Liquid damage is the second most common cause. When liquid (water, coffee, juice, beer) reaches the logic board, it doesn't destroy everything instantly — it creates corrosion over time. Minerals in the liquid form conductive bridges between traces that shouldn't be connected, causing short circuits. That's why a MacBook can work for a few days after a liquid incident, then suddenly die. Fast intervention (ultrasonic cleaning within the first 24-48 hours) prevents permanent corrosion.

Fully drained or faulty battery can make the MacBook seem dead. Apple Silicon (M1-M4) needs a functional battery to power on — even when plugged in. A swollen battery, dead cells, or a faulty BMS circuit will prevent startup. In this case, the solution is simple: battery replacement.

Other causes: faulty SSD (MacBook stuck in boot loop), faulty RAM (on older models with slot RAM), faulty GPU (common on MacBook Pro 2011-2015 with AMD dGPU), corrupted firmware (especially after failed macOS updates), and — rarely — faulty processor.

At Radical Service, we don't replace the entire logic board (which would cost 3,000-6,000+ RON). Instead, we repair it at component level using micro-soldering techniques. This means: we identify the exact faulty chip, capacitor, MOSFET or trace on the board and replace it individually.

The process starts with a visual and electrical diagnostic: we inspect the board under a microscope for signs of corrosion, burns or damaged components. Then we use the micro-soldering station (hot air, flux, lead-free solder) and testing equipment (multimeter, oscilloscope, lab power supply) to identify the exact circuit-level defect.

Ultrasonic cleaning is the first step for MacBooks affected by liquids. The logic board is fully removed from the case and submerged in an ultrasonic bath with professional cleaning solution. Ultrasound removes residues, minerals and corrosion from places inaccessible by hand — under BGA chips, around connectors and on fine traces. After cleaning, the board is controllably dried and retested.
