What symptoms do we fix?

"MacBook won't turn on" can mean several things. We diagnose the exact cause regardless of symptom.

No reaction at all

You press the power button and nothing happens: no LED, no sound, no signs of life. Usually: power circuit, SMC, or fully drained battery.

Black screen, but powered on

MacBook seems on (you hear the fan or boot sound), but the screen stays completely black. Could be display, GPU, or firmware issue.

Turns on then off

MacBook powers on for a few seconds, then shuts down by itself. Causes: short circuit on board, faulty RAM, thermal issue, insufficient power.

Stuck on Apple logo

Apple logo appears but doesn't go further, or progress bar freezes. Usually: faulty SSD, corrupted macOS, or firmware issue.

Liquid damage

Water, coffee, juice, beer — any liquid that reaches the logic board can cause corrosion and short circuits. Fast action significantly improves recovery odds.

Won't charge

Charger LED won't light up, MagSafe doesn't glow, USB-C doesn't detect power. Could be the charging port, battery management circuit, or charger itself.

Why won't your MacBook turn on?

A MacBook that won't turn on is one of the most common issues we see at Radical Service. Causes range from trivial (fully drained battery) to complex (logic board defects), but in the vast majority of cases, the problem is fixable.

Power circuit is the #1 cause. The MacBook has a complex power chain: from the charging port (MagSafe or USB-C), through the power management circuit (controlled by the CD3215 chip on USB-C models), then to the battery and the rest of the components. If a single capacitor or MOSFET in this chain burns out, the MacBook stops getting power — even though the charger and battery are functional.

Liquid damage is the second most common cause. When liquid (water, coffee, juice, beer) reaches the logic board, it doesn't destroy everything instantly — it creates corrosion over time. Minerals in the liquid form conductive bridges between traces that shouldn't be connected, causing short circuits. That's why a MacBook can work for a few days after a liquid incident, then suddenly die. Fast intervention (ultrasonic cleaning within the first 24-48 hours) prevents permanent corrosion.

Fully drained or faulty battery can make the MacBook seem dead. Apple Silicon (M1-M4) needs a functional battery to power on — even when plugged in. A swollen battery, dead cells, or a faulty BMS circuit will prevent startup. In this case, the solution is simple: battery replacement.

Other causes: faulty SSD (MacBook stuck in boot loop), faulty RAM (on older models with slot RAM), faulty GPU (common on MacBook Pro 2011-2015 with AMD dGPU), corrupted firmware (especially after failed macOS updates), and — rarely — faulty processor.

What can you try at home before service?

A few simple steps Apple also recommends. If none work, professional diagnostic is needed.

1

Check the power supply

Make sure the charger works (test it on another Mac if possible) and that it's plugged directly into a wall outlet, not through a faulty extension cord. Leave the MacBook charging for 30 minutes before trying to power on.

2

Hold the power button for 10 seconds

Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds, then release. Wait 5 seconds and press normally. This resets the power controller on some models.

3

Disconnect all accessories

Unplug everything connected: USB hub, external monitor, external drive, dongles. A faulty USB device can prevent startup. Try again with only the charger connected.

4

Reset SMC (Intel only)

On Intel MacBooks: shut down the MacBook, hold Shift+Control+Option+Power for 10 seconds, release, then power on normally. On Apple Silicon (M1-M4), SMC reset doesn't apply — it's integrated into the main processor.

5

Reset NVRAM

On Intel: power on and immediately hold Command+Option+P+R for 20 seconds. On Apple Silicon, NVRAM resets automatically at every startup — no manual action required.

Important: if the MacBook was affected by liquids

Don\'t try to power it on! Shut it down immediately, don\'t connect the charger, and bring it to the shop as soon as possible. Every hour counts — corrosion spreads over time and can turn a 500 RON repair into an 1800 RON one.

How we repair MacBook logic boards

At Radical Service, we don't replace the entire logic board (which would cost 3,000-6,000+ RON). Instead, we repair it at component level using micro-soldering techniques. This means: we identify the exact faulty chip, capacitor, MOSFET or trace on the board and replace it individually.

The process starts with a visual and electrical diagnostic: we inspect the board under a microscope for signs of corrosion, burns or damaged components. Then we use the micro-soldering station (hot air, flux, lead-free solder) and testing equipment (multimeter, oscilloscope, lab power supply) to identify the exact circuit-level defect.

Ultrasonic cleaning is the first step for MacBooks affected by liquids. The logic board is fully removed from the case and submerged in an ultrasonic bath with professional cleaning solution. Ultrasound removes residues, minerals and corrosion from places inaccessible by hand — under BGA chips, around connectors and on fine traces. After cleaning, the board is controllably dried and retested.

Repair vs full replacement advantages: the price is 3-5x lower, your data stays intact (no migration needed), and the MacBook keeps its original serial number. Our success rate for logic board repairs is over 85%.

Logic board repair or new MacBook?

When the MacBook won\'t turn on, the first reaction is to think about a new one. But in most cases, repair costs a fraction of a new MacBook\'s price — and the result is functionally identical.

Example: a MacBook Pro M2 that won\'t turn on due to a burnt capacitor on the power circuit. Repair: ~720 RON. New MacBook Pro M2: 8,500+ RON. You save over 6,500 RON, keep the same data on the SSD, the same performance, and get a 3-month repair warranty.

There are situations where we don\'t recommend repair: if the defect is in the processor (rare but happens), if the board has extensive corrosion on more than 30% of its surface, or if the MacBook is already 8+ years old and performance no longer matches your needs. In these cases, we honestly advise investing in a new MacBook.

Frequently asked

Do your technicians speak English?
Yes — every estimate, technical explanation and follow-up email is in English if you prefer. We help expats and English-speaking customers daily. WhatsApp is also answered in English.
How much does it cost to repair a MacBook that won't turn on?
Depends on the cause. Liquid damage cleaning starts from 500 RON, and logic board repair from 720 RON. Diagnostic costs 180 RON and is included in the repair price if you go ahead.
My MacBook shows no signs of life — can it still be repaired?
In most cases, yes. Even a MacBook with no signs of life can have a fixable issue: burnt capacitor, faulty power circuit, stuck SMC, dead battery. We diagnose the exact cause before proposing the solution.
How long does logic board repair take?
Logic board repair takes 2-3 working days on average. Time depends on defect complexity and component availability. We contact you with the quote within 24 hours of diagnostic.
Will I lose my data if the MacBook won't turn on?
Usually not. On Apple Silicon MacBooks (M1, M2, M3, M4), data is on the integrated chip. On Intel models with soldered SSD, we access data via special methods. On those with detachable SSD (2015 and older), we extract the SSD directly.
I spilled liquid on my MacBook. What should I do?
Power the MacBook off immediately (hold power button for 10 seconds), don't turn it back on, don't plug in the charger, flip it upside down on a towel and bring it to the shop as soon as possible. The faster you act, the better the recovery odds.
Why doesn't SMC/NVRAM reset work?
SMC and NVRAM resets only solve minor software issues. If the MacBook won't turn on due to a hardware fault (burnt power circuit, faulty capacitor, corrosion), no software reset will work — component-level repair is needed.
Do you repair logic boards or replace them?
We repair them at component level (micro-soldering). We identify the exact faulty chip, capacitor or circuit and replace it individually. This approach costs significantly less than full board replacement and keeps your data intact.
My MacBook turns on but stays on a black screen. Is it the logic board?
Not necessarily. Black screen at startup can be caused by: corrupted firmware, faulty SSD, display issue (backlight), or logic board. Our diagnostic identifies the exact cause — we don't replace parts on guesses.
Can I walk in without an appointment?
Yes. Walk-ins welcome Mon-Fri 08:30-17:30. If your MacBook won't turn on, we recommend coming in as soon as possible, especially if affected by liquids.
Do you accept MacBooks sent by courier?
Yes. Pack the MacBook well (wrap it in bubble wrap), send by courier to our Bucharest address. We diagnose, contact you with the quote, repair, and return free of charge.
