MacBook Cracked Screen from a Cat Bite: why it happens and how to fix it

„My cat ate a corner of my laptop." It sounds like a joke, but it is one of the most common causes of a cracked MacBook screen — a bite in the thin corner of the lid cracks the panel and a coloured line or spot appears. The good news: it is repairable, often the same day.

A fluffy cat next to an open MacBook — the common cause of a cracked screen when it bites the corner of the lid

You are not alone: it is surprisingly common

It seems like a bizarre accident, but it is a classic. There are dozens of forum threads with exactly this story — users themselves say „it is crazy how common this is" and „this is the third case I have seen this week". Cats love the thin corner of the lid: they rub their cheek on it, then bite it.

A few public threads, if you want to see how common it is: r/mac — „my cat bit the corner… and a purple line" and r/macbookpro — „my cat bit the corner of my laptop".

Why the corner? What actually happens

A MacBook lid is extremely thin, and the corner is its most vulnerable point. A cat’s tooth concentrates a large force onto a tiny area — exactly enough to crack the panel inside, even if from the outside it looks like a small mark.

A crack in the panel

It cracks the liquid-crystal / OLED layer. It is not „just the glass" — it is the display itself.

Coloured line or spot

A stripe (often purple/black) or a spreading spot appears. Sometimes a fully black screen.

The rest is intact

Your processor, SSD and data are untouched. Only the screen is affected.

Does it spread over time?

Often, yes. The bitten corner becomes a weak point, and the defect can progress over weeks or months: new stripes, dark areas toward the edges, flicker, up to an unusable screen. There are also cases where it stays stable for months — but it is a lottery you do not control.

Our advice: back up now (a screen defect does not affect your data, but if it reaches a black screen it is hard to work until the repair) and avoid pressure on that area — do not press there, do not close the lid by grabbing the corner, do not clean it aggressively. Fix it before it worsens or before an important moment.

How it is fixed properly: the panel, not the whole assembly

This is where the price and the approach differ between the official channel and a specialized service.

Official channel

Full display assembly

Usually the whole assembly is replaced — panel + aluminium lid + hinges + cameras. Correct, but expensive. A cat bite is accidental damage, so it is not covered by the warranty (only AppleCare+ with accidental damage, for a fee).

Specialized service (us)

Just the LCD panel + True Tone transfer

We replace only the damaged panel (not the whole lid) and transfer the IC chip to keep True Tone. Significant savings, same visual result — and if we have the panel in stock, often the same day.

The workshop case: a MacBook Air 15", back the same day

A MacBook Air 15" (A2941) with a damaged display after the cat bit the corner. We had the panel in stock, the customer had a real emergency — so the laptop went home the same day, with a new screen. The customer left us the story herself, in a Google review:

We do not promise „same day" every time — it depends on the model and stock. But for common models we keep panels in stock for exactly these situations.

„I HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Great people, from reception to the technician who replaced the display of a MacBook Air! Short story… «My cat ate a corner of my laptop!» I contacted them, they had the display in stock, I explained the huge urgency I had and, because they were so kind, I had the laptop back by the end of the day with a new display! Thank you! Big LIKE!!!" (translated from Romanian)

Frequently asked questions

My cat bit the corner of my MacBook screen — can it be repaired?

Yes. Even if the outside looks almost intact, the bite cracks the LCD/OLED panel inside, and that is fixed by replacing the screen. A specialized shop can often replace just the panel (not the whole aluminium assembly), with True Tone transfer — cheaper and faster than the official channel.

Does the coloured line or spot spread over time?

Often, yes. The bitten corner becomes a weak point, and many users report that over weeks or months new lines, dark patches, flicker or even a fully black screen appear. Sometimes it stays stable — but do not count on it. Back up your data and fix it before it worsens or before an important moment.

The laptop works fine, only the screen is affected. Can I keep using it?

Short term, yes — the processor, your data and the rest of the components are intact. You can even work on an external monitor. But it is a temporary fix: the defect can progress and the area stays fragile. We recommend replacing the screen when it bothers you or when you notice it spreading.

Does Apple’s warranty cover a cat bite?

No — it is accidental damage, not a manufacturing defect, so the standard warranty does not cover it. If you have AppleCare+ with accidental damage coverage, Apple can replace the screen for a fixed fee. Without AppleCare+, the official channel is expensive, because it usually replaces the whole display assembly.

Can just the LCD panel be replaced, not the whole assembly?

Yes, and often that is the right call. The official channel usually replaces the entire display assembly (panel + aluminium lid + hinges + cameras), hence the high price. A specialized service can replace only the damaged panel and transfer the IC chip to keep True Tone — significant savings, same visual result.

How much does a MacBook screen replacement cost?

It depends on the model (Air/Pro, generation) and the option chosen (panel-only vs full assembly). We do not quote off the top of our head — check the exact price on the display replacement page or message us on WhatsApp at 0739 795 800 with your model (A-number). If we have the panel in stock, the repair can often be done the same day.

Is it really that common for a cat to bite the corner of a laptop?

Far more common than you would think. There are dozens of Reddit threads with exactly this story („crazy how common this is"), and we have seen the case many times in the workshop. The thin corner of the lid attracts cats — they rub their cheek on it and then bite it. Bottom line: do not leave your MacBook open and unattended near a cat.

Did your cat bite your screen?

Tell us the model (A-number) and we will tell you on the spot whether we have the panel in stock. For common models, the repair can often be done the same day.
