What happened
The laptop came into contact with liquid. Afterwards, the screen stayed completely black: no picture, not even at startup. At first glance, the behaviour pointed to something much worse, a failed display or even the logic board.
The owner first went to an Apple authorised partner. They got a quote of over 6,000 lei and a turnaround of 2-3 weeks. Then they came to us.
How a tiny sensor turns off the whole screen
Near the hinge, the MacBook has a Lid Angle Sensor, a sensor that measures the angle of the lid. macOS relies on it to know whether the laptop is open or closed: when you close the lid, the screen turns off and the Mac goes to sleep.
When liquid reaches the sensor’s connector, the signal no longer gets through properly. The Mac no longer knows the screen is open and keeps it off, as if the laptop were closed. To the user, it looks exactly like a dead display or a failed logic board. Hence the big quote.
The lesson: a black screen after liquid damage doesn’t automatically mean a new display or a new logic board. Before any big quote, what matters is component-level diagnostics that find exactly which part is affected.
What we replaced
During diagnostics we found the sensor’s connector damaged by liquid and the daughterboard affected as well. We replaced both parts: the Lid Angle Sensor and the daughterboard module.
Once fitted, the laptop showed a picture again. All the same day, for a total cost of 1,200 lei.
Authorised vs. Radical Service, on the same laptop
Apple authorised partner
over 6,000 lei
turnaround: 2-3 weeks
Radical Service
1,200 lei
turnaround: same day
The difference doesn’t come from „shortcuts”. Authorised partners follow Apple’s procedures, which usually replace whole assemblies and order parts case by case. We diagnose at component level and replace only what’s affected. And because we keep a permanent stock of parts for Apple devices, we don’t wait for any order: the laptop comes in and leaves repaired.
Got a big quote after liquid damage?
Get a second opinion before you pay. A black screen, a laptop that won’t start or Wi-Fi that stopped working can have causes much smaller than they seem. Our diagnostics tell you exactly what’s faulty and what it costs, before the repair.
