Definition: iPhone charging IC generations — Tristar on iPhone 5-8, Hydra on iPhone 11-12, Kraken on iPhone 13 and newer.

Context: Critical chip that detects and authenticates the connected Lightning/USB-C accessory. Typical defect: "Accessory Not Supported" message on genuine Apple cables, intermittent charging, abnormal battery drain even if Battery Health shows healthy.

T2 Security Chip

Definition: Apple-dedicated security coprocessor present on Intel MacBooks 2018-2020.

Context: Manages: hardware SSD encryption, Touch ID, audio, recovery boot. The most problematic Apple chip. If T2 dies, MacBook becomes completely bricked — no standard recovery possible. Partially repairable (60% success rate) via BIOS/EFI reprogramming with specialised programmer.

SoC

— System on Chip

Definition: Main Apple Silicon chip integrating CPU, GPU, Neural Engine, memory controller and Secure Enclave in a single component.

Context: Variants: M1, M2, M3, M4, M5 (Mac/iPad), A14-A18 (iPhone), S6-S10 (Watch). On Apple Silicon, RAM (LPDDR5) is soldered next to the SoC. If the SoC dies = non-repairable board, full replacement required.

SMC

— System Management Controller

Definition: Hardware controller managing fans, temperature sensors, stand-by power, physical buttons on MacBook.

Context: On Intel: separate chip (U8900 or similar). On Apple Silicon: integrated in the SoC. Typical defect: fans at 100% constantly, MacBook won't boot after sleep, unresponsive buttons. SMC reset = hold power 10 sec sequence (Apple Silicon).

Secure Enclave

— SE

Definition: Security coprocessor isolated within the SoC, storing the hardware encryption key for the SSD and biometric data.

Context: Stores: SSD encryption key (FileVault), Touch ID fingerprints, Face ID mapping, Apple Pay certificates. If the SoC dies, encrypted data is practically lost — Secure Enclave cannot be moved or read externally.

Neural Engine

— NE

Definition: Dedicated machine learning processor integrated in Apple Silicon.

Context: On M1: 16 cores, 11 TOPS. On M3: 18 TOPS. On M4: 38 TOPS. Used for: Face ID, computational photography, local Apple Intelligence, Siri 2.0. Not separately replaceable — part of the SoC.

NAND Flash

Definition: Non-volatile memory chips storing data (internal SSD).

Context: On Apple Silicon: chips soldered to the board, controller integrated in SoC, hardware encryption via Secure Enclave. On Intel: chips soldered with separate T2 controller. Wear-out (M1 SSD-gate): after 50-100 GB/day swap, hits write limit in 2-3 years.

MOSFET

— Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor

Definition: SMD transistor used to switch voltages on the logic board.

Context: On MacBook: dozens of MOSFETs for power distribution. Typical defect: short circuit from surge or liquid. Repairable via desoldering and replacement (standard component, immediate stock). 30-60 minute operation under microscope.

BGA

— Ball Grid Array

Definition: Chip packaging type with solder balls on the underside, instead of side pins.

Context: Used for: CPU, GPU, PMIC, SSD controller, SoC. All main MacBook chips are BGA. Repair requires a BGA station and reballing (solder ball replacement). Typical ball diameter: 0.3-0.5mm.

SMD Capacitor

— Surface Mount Device Capacitor

Definition: Small passive component (1-3mm) soldered on the surface of the logic board.

Context: MacBook boards contain hundreds of SMD capacitors for voltage filtering and decoupling. Typical defect: swelling, short circuit from liquid or surge. Quick repair: desoldering + replacement with identical component (1-2 minutes per capacitor).

Reballing

Definition: Procedure for replacing solder balls (BGA balls) on an extracted chip before remounting.

Context: Steps: chip desoldering with hot air station, cleaning old pads, placing new balls with stencil jig, reflow with specific thermal profile. Different from "reflow" (just reheating — temporary). Typical warranty: 3-5 years. 4-6 hour operation.

Reflow

Definition: Reheating an existing chip to temporarily melt the solder balls and restore contact.

Context: Quick but TEMPORARY solution. Works 3-6 months — the chip re-oxidises. Distinctive: serious services do NOT offer reflow as a permanent solution. Shady services do reflow and issue 90-day warranties (expires before the problem returns).

BoardView

Definition: Digital file with 3D visualisation of a logic board, allowing identification of each component and trace.

Context: Proprietary format (.brd, .cad). Combined with Schematics, allows tracking each signal from source to destination. Obtained through specialised distributors. Essential for honest diagnostic — without BoardView, repair is based on guesswork.

Schematics

Definition: Official electronic diagram of a logic board, with all signals, voltages and connections.

Context: PDF format. Each signal labelled (PPBUS_G3H, PP3V3_G3H, PP5V_S5 etc). MacBook schematics are theoretically Apple property — obtained through professional channels (Louis Rossmann, RossmannGroup, distributors) for repairs.

PPBUS_G3H

— Power Bus G3 Hot

Definition: Main 8.6V power line on MacBook, distributed to all components.

Context: Key test point with multimeter. Missing voltage = source problem (PMIC, MOSFET protect). Voltage short = short circuit on line (defective capacitor, burnt chip). Correct voltage but MacBook won't turn on = problem after PMIC, deeper.

Ultrasonic Cleaning

Definition: Logic board cleaning procedure by immersion in special solution (99% isopropyl alcohol + flux remover) in an ultrasonic bath.

Context: Used for: recovery after liquid damage, flux contaminant cleaning, corrosion removal. Typical frequencies: 40 kHz, 4-8 minutes at 60°C. ~70% recovery from boards with liquid spill if rapid intervention (under 48h from incident).

Corroded Trace Repair

Definition: Physical reconstruction of broken or corroded copper electronic traces on the logic board.
