📅 2010
Antennagate
iPhone 4 antenna attenuation
Affected models: iPhone 4
Symptom: Cellular signal drops dramatically when phone is held in left hand (the "Death Grip" zone).
Technical cause: External antenna design: two metal strips separated by a visible gap. Holding the gap electrically connects the two antennas, attenuating the signal.
Apple response: Apple offered free bumpers (special case) to all iPhone 4 buyers. Steve Jobs declared: "You're holding it wrong." Apple redesigned the antenna on iPhone 4s (2011).
Current status: Fixed at design level (iPhone 4s+).
iPhone 4 Yellow Tint
Display LCD lamination cure issue
Affected models: iPhone 4 (early production batches)
Symptom: Yellow tint visible on display, especially on white backgrounds.
Technical cause: Display lamination adhesive didn't fully "cure" before delivery — Apple accelerated production.
Apple response: Apple did not acknowledge officially. Tint disappeared after 1-2 weeks of use on most units (adhesive naturally cured).
Current status: Self-resolved over time.
📅 2011
MacBook Pro Radeongate

Patterns observed (analysis)
Looking at 16 years of documented defects, several patterns become clear. Understanding these helps anticipate future defects on new Apple devices.
- "Gates" at launch: most major defects appear in the first year of a new design (iPhone 4, MacBook Pro 2011, MacBook Air 2018 butterfly, M1 SSD). Apple learns on the go and corrects in next iteration.
- Apple acknowledges ONLY when public pressure is maximum: iPhone 6 Plus Touch Disease = only after 100+ signed petitions and class action. Butterfly keyboard = only after 3 years and 4 affected models.
- Apple programs always cover a subset of actually affected models: Flexgate program — only MacBook Pro 13" 2016 (even though 13" 2017+ and 15" Touch Bar have the same problem). Touch Disease — only iPhone 6 Plus (even though iPhone 6 has the same problem).
- Apple Silicon = reduced hardware defects, but impossibility of repair: M1+ has fewer traditional defects (PMIC, separate GPU) but when SoC dies = non-repairable board individually. Trade-off design for consumer: better initial durability vs zero repairability.
- Defect addressing migrates to software: modern hardware defects (iPhone 15 Pro overheating, iPhone 14 camera shake, M2 SMC stuck) are fixed via iOS/macOS update, not hardware replacement. Inverse: when software can\'t fix (M1 SSD wear-out), Apple doesn\'t act.
How to check if your device is eligible for an Apple program
- Go to support.apple.com/service-programs — official list with all active programs.
- Identify your device (exact model and year). Apple has interface for entering serial number.
- If your device appears eligible — schedule free repair at the nearest AASP (in Romania: Apcom Băneasa, iStyle).
- If program expired or device not in list — come to a serious independent service (ours) for repair at 50-70% of original AASP cost.
