The key to the whole discussion: the 3 support phases
The biggest confusion comes from the idea that a MacBook „dies" the moment it stops getting a new macOS version. False. Apple\'s software support works in three distinct phases, and your safety depends on which phase you\'re in — not on whether you have the latest version.
Phase 1 — Full support
Roughly 5-8 years from launch
New macOS versions, new features, bug fixes and, most importantly, all security patches. This is the period when your MacBook is as safe as a brand-new one.
What to do: Use it with zero worries. Update to each major macOS version once it feels stable.
Phase 2 — Security patches only
Another ~2 years (sometimes into the 3rd) after the last major version
You no longer get new macOS versions or new features, but Apple keeps delivering security patches for the last 2-3 macOS versions. In practice, you're protected against serious vulnerabilities but „frozen" on your current version.
What to do: Still safe to use, with caution. Install every security patch the moment it appears. Start planning for the future.
Phase 3 — No support at all
After the security patches stop too
Nothing. No features, no fixes, no security. Any newly discovered vulnerability stays forever unpatched on your MacBook. This is where the real risk appears.
What to do: Stop using the MacBook for sensitive activities (banking, email, passwords) without extra measures. Decision time: safely extend the device's life or move to a new one.
Which MacBooks lose macOS 27 Golden Gate support
macOS 27 is a historic moment: the first macOS version to completely abandon the Intel architecture. If your Mac has an Intel processor, macOS 26 Tahoe is the last major version you\'ll ever get. Here are the affected models:

How to check in 10 seconds: Apple menu (top-left corner) → About This Mac. If it says „Apple M1/M2/M3…", you\'re supported by macOS 27. If it says „Intel Core i5/i7/i9…", you\'re on your last major version (macOS 26 Tahoe) and entering the security-patch period.
What actually makes an unpatched MacBook unsafe
„Unsupported" sounds abstract. Concretely, here are the four mechanisms by which an unpatched MacBook becomes, over time, a real security problem:
N-day vulnerabilities
The most subtle danger. When Apple publishes a patch for a new macOS version, attackers analyze exactly what was fixed, then look for the same flaw in older versions that will NOT get the patch. Practically, every update for new Macs becomes a map for attacking the old ones. Not theory — the 2021 Hong Kong attack used exactly this method.
Safari „freezes" with the system
On macOS, Safari is tied directly to the system version. If macOS stops getting updates, so does Safari. The result: it can no longer render modern sites correctly and, worse, no longer supports the newest web security protocols (TLS, certificates). Browsing becomes both awkward and risky.
Malware targeting old systems
Attackers know that unsupported devices no longer defend themselves. An unpatched MacBook becomes an attractive target for malware, ransomware and data theft, especially if used for banking, email or storing passwords. The risk grows with every month past the last patch.
Apps that stop launching
Not a direct security risk, but a practical reality. Developers gradually abandon old macOS versions. Banking apps, VPNs, productivity apps and even third-party browsers eventually start requiring a minimum macOS version you can no longer install. The MacBook becomes increasingly isolated.
A concrete example, not theory: in 2021, a likely state-sponsored attack targeted visitors of Hong Kong political and media sites, exploiting an XNU kernel flaw present in macOS Catalina and Mojave. Users who had stayed on those old versions were exposed because their Macs no longer received the new version, in which the flaw was fixed. This exact type of „N-day vulnerability" is the main risk of an unpatched system.
So — is it still safe? The decision matrix
There\'s no single answer, because it depends on your phase. Find your situation below and see exactly what to do:
You're in Phase 1. Use it freely, update to macOS 27 when it's stable (we recommend waiting for 27.1-27.2 to be safe). No special action needed.
You're in Phase 2. Install every security patch immediately. Use a third-party browser (Chrome/Firefox). Avoid installing software from shady sources. You still have ~2 years of reasonably safe use. Good time for an SSD/battery upgrade if you want to keep it longer.
You're in Phase 3. Stop using it for banking, primary email or passwords without extra measures. Options: (a) turn it into an offline „simple tasks" machine or one for kids; (b) install a lightweight Linux distro that still gets updates; (c) move to an Apple Silicon MacBook. How to safely extend a MacBook\'s life
This is where an honest repair shop genuinely helps. An Intel MacBook that loses macOS 27 isn\'t „junk" — often, a targeted repair gives it several more years of useful life, at a fraction of the price of a new one. Here\'s what actually works:
SSD upgrade (on models that allow it)
Many Intel MacBooks from 2013-2017 have the SSD on a separate connector that can be replaced. A new, larger, faster SSD turns a sluggish MacBook into a usable one. On newer models (2018+) the SSD is soldered to the board and can no longer be swapped — we check this for free for your model.
RAM upgrade (older models only)
MacBook Pros before 2013 have RAM on separate modules that can be increased. From 2013 onward, RAM is soldered to the board and can't be changed. If you have an old model with 4-8GB, an upgrade to 16GB gives it a few more years for everyday tasks.
New battery

Clean macOS reinstall + physical cleaning
A slow MacBook isn't necessarily old — often the system is bloated and the fans are clogged with dust. A clean reinstall of the latest compatible macOS, plus internal cleaning and fresh thermal paste, can restore much of its original performance.
Third-party browser instead of Safari
A free tip: if Safari no longer updates because your macOS is old, install Chrome or Firefox. They keep delivering security updates on older macOS versions longer than Apple does for Safari — so browsing stays safer for longer. It doesn't fix system vulnerabilities, but it covers the most exposed area: the browser.
Our honest rule: if the repair costs under ~40% of the price of an equivalent second-hand Apple Silicon MacBook, and the laptop is otherwise healthy and still in the patch period, the repair is almost always the rational choice. When it\'s genuinely time to replace
There are cases where, honestly, a new MacBook is the right call: when the laptop has been fully without security patches for over 1-2 years AND you use it daily for banking, work or sensitive data; when the fault is on the logic board and the repair cost approaches the value of a replacement; or when you need modern features (Apple Intelligence, new apps) that simply won\'t run on Intel hardware.
