Why batteries wear out on iPhone and MacBook

All lithium-ion batteries have a limited lifespan. Apple designs iPhone batteries to retain 80% of their initial capacity after 500 full charge cycles — equivalent to roughly 1.5-2 years of normal use. On MacBook, the lifespan is around 1000 cycles, meaning 3-5 years depending on usage.

As the battery degrades, you'll notice your phone or laptop needs charging more often, and on iPhone, iOS automatically activates "Performance Management" — a mechanism that throttles processor speed to prevent sudden shutdowns. Result: a phone that feels slow and dies early, even though the hardware is perfectly functional.

On MacBook, a degraded battery can also have a physical effect: lithium-ion cells can swell, deforming the casing and trackpad. A swollen MacBook battery isn't just an inconvenience — it's a risk: it can damage internal components and, in extreme cases, pose a fire hazard. If you notice the trackpad no longer clicks evenly or the bottom case feels slightly bulged, it's time to come in.

When is it time to replace the battery?

The signs are clear. You don't need to wait until the device becomes unusable.

iPhone Signs of a worn battery
  • Battery health below 80% in Settings → Battery
  • iPhone shuts down suddenly at 20-40%
  • Performance is throttled by iOS
  • Phone gets excessively hot during use
  • Battery life noticeably worse than 1-2 years ago
  • "Battery Health Unknown" or "Service Battery" message
MacBook Signs of a worn battery
  • Battery life under 2-3 hours with normal use
  • Swollen battery — deformed case, stiff trackpad
  • macOS shows "Service Recommended" or "Replace Now"
  • MacBook won't turn on without the power cable
  • Charge cycles over 1000 (About This Mac → System Report)
  • Full charge takes much longer than usual
Warning: A swollen MacBook battery is urgent — it can damage the trackpad, display and case if ignored. Don't delay your visit.

Replace the battery or buy a new device?

Many people consider buying a new iPhone or MacBook when the battery fails. But if the device works fine otherwise, replacing the battery is several times cheaper than new equipment and extends the lifespan by another 2-4 years.

For example: an iPhone 13 Pro with a new battery at 299+ RON vs. an iPhone 16 at 5,000+ RON. If the camera, screen and processor are fine, replacing the battery is the logical decision. The same applies to MacBook: a MacBook Air M1 with a new battery at 230+ RON remains an excellent laptop for productivity, browsing and development — no need to spend 7,000 RON on a new model.

Of course, if the device has other problems (broken screen, logic board issues, faulty buttons), we evaluate everything at the free diagnostic and give you honest advice on whether the investment is worth it or upgrade is better.

Frequently asked

Do your technicians speak English?
Yes — every estimate, technical explanation and follow-up email is in English if you prefer. We help expats and English-speaking customers daily. WhatsApp is also answered in English.
How long does iPhone battery replacement take?
iPhone battery replacement usually takes 20-40 minutes. Drop the phone off, the technician swaps the battery, and you test it before leaving.
How long does MacBook battery replacement take?
On MacBook Air and older MacBook Pro, the operation takes 60-90 minutes. On models with glued batteries (post-2019), it may take longer — we estimate exactly at diagnostic.
Do you use original Apple batteries?
Yes. We use Apple Service Pack batteries for the most common models. Alternatively, premium OEM-compatible parts — the part type is confirmed with you before the repair.
What warranty do you offer for battery replacement?
Written 12-month warranty for MacBook battery and 3-month warranty for iPhone battery. If it fails within warranty, we replace it free of charge.
Should I back up my device before bringing it in?
Not necessary for iPhone — your data stays untouched. For MacBook we always recommend a precautionary Time Machine backup, even though the operation doesn't involve the SSD.
Can you test the battery without replacing it?
Yes. Battery diagnostic is free if you go ahead with the repair. You can come to the shop or send the device by courier.
What if my iPhone shows "Battery Health Unknown" after the swap?
On newer iPhones, Apple restricts Battery Health display for non-paired parts. We use original Apple Service Pack parts and, where possible, perform calibration and battery pairing. The battery works at maximum capacity regardless of the message.
Do you accept devices sent by courier?
Yes. Send your iPhone or MacBook by courier to our Bucharest address. We perform the repair and return it free of charge. You only pay for the repair, shipping is free.
Can I walk in without an appointment?
Yes — walk-ins welcome during business hours (Mon-Fri 08:30-17:30). To avoid waiting, you can call or message us on WhatsApp ahead.
Do I lose Apple warranty if I replace the battery with you?
If the device is still under Apple warranty, we recommend the authorised Apple service. If the warranty has expired, our intervention does not affect the device's functionality. We use original parts and professional procedures.
