Logic board part number: 820-00165
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| No green/orange light on charger |
Example of dying U7090: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2D81CE5I3Hg Example of dead D7012: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbrgBKa4-OA Example of corroded capacitors: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4L0ahpCzNk4 (draws 66mA, 2Ohm short to ground on PP3V42_G3H)
Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rrMa6GMbt8
Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlQ-FUMcNy0 (three A1466 machines with the same problem, 1)820-00165, SMC_RESET_L=0.5V 2)820-3209, SMC_RESET_L=1.27V 3)820-00165, SMC_RESET_L not checked)
REMEMBER: SMC is not on if PPBUS_G3H is 8.15v instead of 8.55v(SMC needs to communicate with U7100 to tell it over SMBUS line to raise PPBUS_G3H from 8.15v to 8.55v).
|
| No power, PM_SLP_S4_L is missing, 23-24 mA draw |
|
| No power, 36 mA draw | Blown fuse (F7140) on PPBUS_G3H (can be caused by short on another power rail connected to PPBUS) Can also be partially blown fuse (has continuous beep when testing in continuity mode) BUT shows as ≈ 0.8ohms instead of ≈ 0.3Ohms Partially blown fuse with continuity will show ≈ 8.6V on Pin 1 (PPVBAT_G3H_CHGR_REG) and ≈ 4V on Pin 2 (PPBUS_G3H) Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UBy7L3YzLg (Blown fuse on PPBUS_G3H, 0.4Ohm short to ground via PPBUS_S5_HS_ISNS) Motherboard start with full fan, braindead, 80mA power draw with fan connected, 35mA without fan, small heating on u7100 view on FLIR, PP3v3_s5 present, low pp3v3_s0, corosion under u8030 |
| Green Light on charger, doesn't turn on |
|
| No power, 40-65mA draw | U1930 bad. If damaged, this chip can short any of PM_SLP_S4_L, ALL_SYS_PWRGD or CPU_VCCST_PWRGD to ground. Example (U1930 pin 6 corroded, CPU_VCCST_PWRGD missing, 40-64mA power draw): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AByavrsAhE |
| No power, 70 mA draw | Shorted cap PPVRTC_G3H (name not stated in video) |
| No power, 90 mA draw |
Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMNDHjo_vWQ (second board)
|
| No power, 150 mA draw | in S0 Rail PGOOD is ALL_SYS_PWRGD failed, e.g. S0PGD_C fails: clean up and replace R8156 and R8153 and chip Q8150 (376S0854) |
| No power, 0 mA draw or 250 mA draw, PPBUS_G3H missing | Short to ground on PPBUS_G3H. Blown fuse F7140 for PPBUS_G3H(taking 0 mA), or good fuse(250 mA draw), bad tantalum capacitor on PPBUS_G3H (Short can be found by injecting 1V into the board and checking what gets hot) Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-snMxmZXcgg (270mA draw, 1.2Ohm short to ground on PPBUS_G3H, caused by bad capacitor) |
| No power, 126mA draw | Check R8151, R8152 for corrosion and replace. (SO Rail PGOOD) |
| No power, fluctuating power draw | Can be caused by short on power rail (machine is trying to turn on but failing) Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlhvVesCgME (PP5V_S5 and PP3V3_S5 fluctuating, PP5V_S4 missing (Power rails associated with U7501). 0.6Ohm short to ground on PP5V_S4 (caused by bad capacitor C6401)) |
| No image/backlight |
|
| No power, PPBUS_G3H 4v instead of 8.55v | Bad U7100, blown R7021/R7022 Can also be a bad F7140 fuse, check on both sides to ensure you have 4 volts on both sides before remplacing U7100, fuse went bad acting like a 5-6 ohm resistor, on one side i got around 4V on the other 8.6V. |
| No power, PP3V42 present, 14mA power draw | TPS51980 bad -> replace |
| No Power, orange light, no reaction on Power Button |
|
| Not charging, PPBUS_G3H 17.5V | Corrosion or bad ISL6259 (U7100) and possible bad transistor Q7130 Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnrZgwpiGy4 (replaced ISL6259 (U7100) and Q7130) |
| Any board level issue at all. | Look at J6100, and feel guilt free in killing it. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YWsaPdFnfM (corrosion at 3 of the pins was preventing the machine to turn on) |
| Keyboard and trackpad not working | Bad trackpad cable or bad trackpad. |
| Keyboard and trackpad working on EFI boot but not in OS | The trackpad has 2 modes. It works in USB mode in the boot menu and in OSX is switches to SPI. Diode mode all pins on the trackpad/keyboard connector and compare to working board/FlexBV OBData. Check if TPAD_SPI_INT_L is stable. While OS is booted, measure voltage on pin 2 and 6 of U4810 with known good trackpad and keyboard. If you are missing TPAD_SPI_INT_L or power on pin 6 only of U4810 it can be dead Q4800. Also try replacing U4810 and the connector itself. If you have abnormal voltage on both pin 2 and 6 it can be a dead SPI line to/in the CPU. |
| SMC_RESET_L low, but board works outside of case | Bad trackpad. Trackpad controls SMC_LID, and SMC_RESET_L - so trackpad (or a short in J9500) can mess with backlight. |
Battery not recognized with X Battery not recognized without X | Firstly, try a known good battery before assuming it is the board! If PPBUS_G3H is 8.15v, SMC is not communicating properly with anything because its data line is blown. Check pullups on data line, see what may be pulling it down, most likely bad SMC. U5000 Check SMBUS_SMC_5_G3_SCL and SMBUS_SMC_5_G3_SDA. If they are at 5V, check PP3v42_G3H. If this is at 5V with battery connected, and 3.3V with charger, most likely bad SMC. Replace. |
| Running slow on low battery, high kernel_task usage in activity monitor | Bad connection of R5450 (possible corrosion). Reflow or change R5450. |
| Quarter Fan Spin (All Voltages are Pulsing) |
|
| Braindead |
|
| USB Issues |
|
| 600mA, Battery not charging |
|
| You think PPBUS_G3H is 8.55v | You measured the right side of the fuse, not the left side of the fuse, because you are right handed and keep the red probe of your multimeter in your right hand. Had you measured the left side of the fuse, you'd realize the fuse is blown, likely due to a short circuit. You are probably off in the wilderness, hunting why your PP3V3_S5 & PP5V_S5 are missing, before you even have PPBUS_G3H... we've all been there. |
| green or orange light, no charging. PPBUS_G3H is wrong |
|
| System does not power on. | Inspect the liquid damaged U7090 for corrosion and replace it. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkNncEh9xZE (How unauthorized INFLUENCERS fix Apple products) |
Powers on When battery is Removed & Power Cable connected But wont power on again once turned off | Inspect and Replace the Trackpad Flex Cable. Example: https://boards.rossmanngroup.com/threads/solved-a1466-macbook-air-820-3437-only-turns-on-after-smc-reset.17337/ |
| No Power, CPU VCore present. Fan spins on then off then on and stays on but no CPU activity. | 99% of the time is a bad PCH. Have replaced all components on the board to rule this out. It will appear to do the on off on off on thing that the 3435/7 boards do but only once. This can occur from liquid damage or no liquid damage at all. No solution for this at this time. I found and fixed it .this was due to broken spi trace from r6119 to r1549. 1/5/21 same symptoms as above. U1930 and components near it looked ok, but PP3v3_S5 trace under U1930 was burned from previous liquid damage. Replaced and jumped 3v3_S5 pad. Fixed the issue and worked great. New thing to check on this issue! |
| No power on from the adapter without the battery attached. On charger only, missing PM_BATLOW_L | You are not using a genuine OEM charger. Make sure to use an OEM charger or cable at all times. The 00164/5 boards are VERY picky about this from experience. |
| No Camera (Please do not fix unless required) | Different isuses
|
| No power, 110ma | Missing allsyspwrgd, PM_PCH_PWROK not present
|
| No PPDCIN_G3H when using genuine Magsafe | Knock off charger worked ok, but the OEM refused to provide any volts. The OEM chargers will only switch through the power once a load is detected (knock offs just switch on regardless). Although the PPDCIN_G3H impedance measured ok @ 68k, residual voltage was noted on R7012 after the connector was removed. This was leakage from a defective Q7180 (in rush limiter) allowing stored voltage from C7184 back to the input. This interfered with the charger load detection and thus never switched the magsafe voltage through. Edit: This fault can also be caused by leaky D7005 or missing/corroded R7180. Quick check is to connect charged battery only and check voltage on R7012. If you have anything above 0V, genuine magsafe's won't work. |
| fan spins at max speed continuously |
|
| No WiFi |
|
| SMC inactive, no power draw | PPBUS_G3H was 8.3V so SMC was inactive. Wasn't caused by usual suspects SMC_RESET_L or a missing PP3V3_S5_AVREF_SMC as these were all correct. Slight corrosion seen on top of Y5110, but apart from that, area around SMC looked clean. Confirmed with a scope that there was bias, but no osciallation on the crystal. Replaced Y5110 before moving to the SMC, and this actually fixed it. Go figure; crystals rarely ever fail. |
| No power, 40ma |
|
| random program or system crashing | Check the row of caps between C1280 to C1291, replace if damaged. |
| No power, PP3V3_S5 absent and PP5V_S5 low at 1V | C7501 leaky (around 80 ohms) in U7400 VREF2 circuit. |
| No CPU Vcore, 120 ma power draw | All rails present, but no CPU Vcore. PM_PCH_PWROK is stuck low as U1950 Pin 8 corroded (PP3V4_G3H input). Can also be corrosion under U1930 (CPU_VCCST_PWRGD is stuck low). Both cases present on this liquid damaged board. |
| Won't boot from Big Sur/Monterey installers | Boots with High Sierra USB installer, however Big Sur or Monterey installers result in the Don't Enter symbol. Realised I had replaced the SMC on this board from 820-3437 but had neglected to update the firmware for 820-00165 board. Reflashed using Muerto's SMC tool and that solved it. |
No power, No fan, PPBUS_G3H OK, PP3V3_S4 at 0.34V (Or around) |
|
