In short

MacBook Neo is the cheapest Apple laptop in history — from 3,499 RON in Romania (€699). It uses the A18 Pro chip from the iPhone 16 Pro (not an M-series chip), comes in 4 vivid colours and has a 13" screen with no notch. Ideal for students and users who want the Apple ecosystem without paying 5,000+ RON.

What is MacBook Neo?

MacBook Neo is a completely new product in the Apple lineup — the first budget laptop in the company's history. It was announced on 4 March 2026 at the Apple Special Experience event (simultaneously in New York, London and Shanghai) and became available from 11 March 2026.

Unlike all previous MacBooks which use M-series chips (M1, M2, M3, M4), MacBook Neo uses the A18 Pro chip — the same chip from the iPhone 16 Pro. It's the first time Apple has put a smartphone chip in a laptop, a decision that keeps the price low but comes with some trade-offs.

The design is completely new: uniform iPad-style bezels (no notch), 4 vivid colours (Citrus, Indigo, Blush, Silver) and a body of 60% recycled aluminium. At 1.22 kg, it's one of the lightest laptops in the Apple range.

What it lacks vs MacBook Air M4

MacBook Neo costs ~1,700 RON less than the Air M4 (5,199 RON). Here's what you sacrifice:

M4 chip → A18 Pro
A18 Pro handles everyday tasks, but M4 is ~30–40% faster for intensive workloads. For browsing and documents you won't feel the difference.
Fixed 8GB RAM (Air: 16GB)
You can't upgrade the RAM. With 8GB and 15+ tabs, MacBook Neo can become slow. Air M4 has 16GB standard — a multitasking game changer.
No MagSafe
You charge via USB-C. If you yank the cable, the laptop falls. Air M4 has MagSafe — the cable detaches safely.
One USB 2 port (slow)
One of the USB-C ports transfers at USB 2 speeds (~480 Mbps). If you copy large files to an external drive, it'll be slow.
Wi-Fi 6E (not Wi-Fi 7)
In practice it doesn't matter yet — Wi-Fi 7 routers aren't common in Romania. Wi-Fi 6E is fast.
Only 1 external monitor
Air M4 supports 2 external monitors simultaneously. Neo only supports 1. If you work with a dual-monitor setup, Air is the right choice.

Who is MacBook Neo for?

Buy MacBook Neo if:
  • → You're a student and need a laptop for college — browser, docs, presentations, Zoom
  • → You're coming from Windows and want into the Apple ecosystem without spending 5,000+ RON
  • → You need a second laptop or something lightweight for travel
  • → Your tasks are light: email, browsing, streaming, social media, notes
  • → You want one of these colours — Citrus or Indigo aren't on other MacBooks
Think twice if:
  • → You do heavy multitasking with 20+ tabs and many apps at once — 8GB RAM can be felt
  • → You need a dual-monitor setup at the office — Neo only supports 1 external monitor
  • → You store a lot locally (video, photo, projects) — 256GB fills up quickly; pick the 512GB model
Don't get MacBook Neo if:
  • → You do video editing, graphic design or music — MacBook Air M4 or Pro are much more suitable
  • → You program professionally with large builds — 8GB fixed RAM will become limiting
  • → You need Thunderbolt or USB 3 on both ports — Neo has one at USB 2
  • → You want to upgrade from MacBook Air M2 or M3 — the performance gap doesn't justify the cost

Verdict: Is MacBook Neo worth it?

Yes, for the right audience. At 3,499 RON, MacBook Neo offers the Apple-quality screen, the exceptional 16-hour battery, the beautiful design and the vivid colours — things no Windows laptop at the same price can match.

The trade-offs are real: fixed 8GB RAM, one USB 2 port, no MagSafe, no Touch ID on the base model. If you understand these limits and your tasks are light, Neo is an excellent choice.

If your budget allows 5,200 RON, MacBook Air M4 is clearly better: 16GB RAM, M4, MagSafe, Touch ID, 512GB storage standard. But if 3,499 RON is your max, MacBook Neo does the job.

Frequently asked questions

MacBook Neo or MacBook Air M4 — which to pick?

If budget is tight and tasks are light (uni, office, browsing), Neo is enough. If you can afford the ~1,700 RON difference, Air M4 is significantly better: 16GB RAM fixed, M4 chip, MagSafe, Touch ID from the start, 512GB storage. Long term, Air M4 keeps up better with future apps.

Is 8GB RAM enough in 2026?

For everyday tasks — yes. Browser with 10–15 tabs, Word, Excel, Zoom, Spotify in the background work well. If you open Figma, Xcode, Adobe apps or have a 30+ tab habit, 8GB will be felt. MacBook Neo uses SSD as swap memory, which helps, but with a performance penalty.

256GB or 512GB — which to pick?

If you use iCloud+ (39 RON/month for 200GB or 59 RON/month for 2TB), 256GB is enough. If you keep local video, a large photo library or coding projects, get 512GB from the start — the SSD can't be upgraded later. The 512GB model also comes with Touch ID, which is a bonus.

Which colour do you recommend?

Silver is the safe choice — goes anywhere, resists trends. Indigo is the "wow" pick for professional environments — sophisticated without being loud. Citrus is for those who want to stand out. Blush is delicate and elegant. Practical note: all colours look similar in strong light — the difference is most visible indoors.

Does MacBook Neo have Apple Intelligence (AI)?

Yes — MacBook Neo supports Apple Intelligence (in beta). A18 Pro has a powerful Neural Engine, the same one from iPhone 16 Pro that runs all of Apple's AI features. That includes Writing Tools, Image Playground, notification summaries and improved Siri. Apple says Neo is up to 3× faster than competing PCs on local AI workloads.
